Staff and Key is the recording label of Keith Spears, a neoromantic composer living in Portland, OR. Inspired by magic, fantasy, and the forests and mountains of the Pacific Northwest, he explores contemporary classical landscapes filled with myth and mystery.
Before moving to Oregon in 2013, Keith provided soundtracks for Precarious Audio Theater, indie horror short Zombie Zero, and HafenGeist, a gothic ballet based on Hansel & Gretel. His first album, 49N 15E, delved into the secret electronic world of Cold War numbers station, while his 2018 EP The Heart of Nosferatu explored the sounds of classic gothic soundtracks. Keith's music is influenced by the works of composers like Beethoven and Shostakovich, the soundtracks of John Williams and Bernard Herrmann, and the concept albums of Pink Floyd and the Alan Parsons Project.
Like a good fairy tale, the music of Staff and Key is about exploration and transformation, the journey and the destination. The listener is invited into enchanted realms and dark woods, where they may find that the magic was within them from the beginning.
